Job Candidacy

Posted on March 8, 2022

I often search for potential candidates for various roles within my employer's organization and for my personal projects. If you happen to approach me randomly to inquire about a position, assume that the initial interview has already begun. If you did your homework, you will likely be invited to an on-site or phone interview so that we have a better opportunity to review one another.

I lead a technology team, so I'll obviously analyze your technical ability. One thing to consider is that I require some amount of coding skills for all roles. This is due to the fact that coding skills are required to simplify and improve tasks and ultimately for automaton. The level of required coding skills will depend on the role and experience level. Development roles require the most programming and engineer skills. Admin and analyst roles require scripting skills at a minimum. Senior and experienced roles require advanced programming and engineering skills. Unfortunately, due to previous experience, I can no longer tolerate the lack of coding, scripting and logic skills for experienced roles, even if you're willing to learn. Afterall, if you're willing to learn then you would have already taken initiative.

Some of the most important skills that I look for in candidates is ambition, honesty and teamwork. If you require a lot of downtime, if you tend to make empty promises, or if you cannot work alongside others, then you probably will not be happy while working on my team. If you cannot accept constructive criticism (if you're overly sensitive) then again, you probably will not be happy on my team. My team works diligently and autonomously to accomplish common goals and everyone must provide value. This is not to say that we're perfect but we strive for excellence. This is also not to say that you will be micro managed but you will be under a spotlight until you've completed your probationary period successfully.

Once you've joined my team, you can expect to be challenged, hopefully in a fun way. One thing that I require is detailed daily reports. The information that I receive from these reports helps me monitor your progress and it allows me to coordinate througout the organization. If I notice anything concerning, I will intervene and help you. I do not intend to micromanage and I do not intend to spy on anyone. I simply want to ensure that everyone has a great experience and that I can help you navigate through your career, while also benefiting the company. Afterall, we can't expect extra benefits if the company doesn't do well.

Don't be afraid to ask me for help. I will always find time to help you if you're uncomfortable with something as long as you're upfront an honest with me. And don't be afraid to expose your weaknesses to me. I will do whatever I can to help you grow. It's when you leave me in the dark that things won't go well. And that's simply because I won't know what I don't know. Think of it like this. I succeed when you succeed. So, I have every reason to do my best and help you succeed.
